8:33 am - Father's Day Oratorio
|
It looks like I will be writing a 'Father's Day Oratorio' in the next couple of years. What I'd like to do is collect short paragraphs from friends and family about their Dads, and use that to compile a libretto for a 20-40 minute oratorio. Furthermore, I plan on publishing a print on demand book(let) containing all the best stories, even the ones I didn't use for the libretto. I would of course credit anything I use in this booklet. If you're game to submit a story about your father, don't be too concerned about artiness of the text, as I'll be changing it anyway to conform to a more cohesive style. If you are interested, either post 'em here, or email them to me.
[I will be posting my examples in the next few weeks]

7:58 am - podcasts
|
|
My first post in ages. There's a chance I may be driving to WI in August, which is pretty much a 24 hour trip, and I'll probably be doing it solo. Thus, I may buy an ipod to keep the radio interesting. Does anyone have any interesting podcasts to recommend?

7:16 pm - High School Profile
|
My 20-year class reunion is coming up, and a website has been started to allow us to catch up a bit. Several members of my graduating class have written personal bios, but I'm not comfortable with the usual fair, so I decided to try writing one that reflects my peculiar nature . . . __________
For the last twenty years I have lived in nearly constant fear of the eventual onslaught of robots . . .
Alright. I have to admit, I haven't written a profile bio as of yet as I hadn't thought of a good opening line. I think that one's pretty good. The runner up was . . .
I have hair here, and here, but I don't have hair here. Is this website right for me?
Rather than write a personal biography (I am oddly private - emphasis on oddly) or a career profile (which is available via one of the website links), I think I would be much more fun and entertaining to enumerate factoids (a bit light on fact at times) . . .
In the past twenty years, I've . . .
had my photo taken with Rupert Jee of the Hello Deli.
had my photo taken in front of the Weiner Mobile.
performed the dance from the "Robert's Wedding" episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" at my wedding, only to be upstaged by the maid of honor and 3 close friends who performed the OK Go dance, "C-C-C-Cinnamon Lips" dance at our reception.
had several good halloween costumes: the Black Monolith from 2001, Trent from the cartoon Daria, & most recently Sweeney Todd.
developed a theory of my growing boredom (to others). It involves my growth in weight combined with the industrial strength man-girdle I wear at all times (yes, ALL times), making myself essentially a dense source of gravity, seemingly slowing time to those around me.
become somewhat of an amateur oracle of sorts, predicting amongst other things that in the future a 17 year old girl will win a pulitzer prize for literature based upon a list of potentially cool band names written in the margin of her mathematics notebook.
invented a numbering system called unary, where all numbers are expressed as '0'. Degrees of sizes of '0' can be implied through vocal inflection or through ambiguous hand gestures.
attempted to grow a third arm (unsuccessfully) simply through the power of intense concentration.

miss_kitty09 and I are going through our kitchen stuff. Any of you MA folks want a set of Dansk ware (large plates, medium plates, saucers, coffee cups)? Also to go 4 miscellaneous coffee cups (2 for Myers Rum, and 2 brown ones). Also, a plastic psuedo diner straw dispensor.

8:39 am - Democratic Martyrs
|
In a recent issue of the Atlantic Monthly several authors were asked to writed consise essays about what they felt the idea of America was. David Foster Wallace (one of my favorite authors) responded that the idea is freedom and liberty, and that perhaps we should consider the victims of 9/11 of to be "Democratic Martyrs". He goes on to state that we accept some 40,000 deaths from automobile accidents every year, and we don't outlaw the car because we recognize its value to society. Should we not consider the value of freedom and liberty and recognize that we shouldn't curtail our freedom and liberty so quickly.
You can read the original article here.

I've started a Facebook page, because my sister has one, and I gotta say I'm addicted already. They have a travel advisor site, where you can post various locations you've visited. I'm up to 127 locations in 13 countries (granted that 15 of those locations are in Wisconsin).

I don't post family stuff very often, but my father's Aunt Merle is turning 105 on the 23rd. Manitowoc's Herald Times Reporter recently covered a birthday celebration in her honor held at Washington Junior High School (where she used to teach).
current mood: proud
